Yeti Yell 11.27.22

Good afternoon Yeti Families,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday break.  We had such a fun time at the Turkey trot last week.  We have three weeks before our Christmas break. I am sure we will run into some snowy days.  Here is some information from the district about winter weather followed by the Glacier Hills procedures we will use this winter.

Winter Weather

In inclement weather, Canyons District will do all it can to keep schools open and operating — but safety comes first

Temperatures have dropped, and the mountains are blanketed in glistening layers of snow, which means winter has arrived! What are Canyons District’s procedures and guidelines regarding snow closures and delays? First and foremost, we live in Utah — a state well-prepared for big snow. It’s important to know that Canyons District will make every effort to keep schools open and operating as usual. In the event, however, the weather is so extreme that road conditions become unsafe, Canyons District will either implement a late start, giving snow plows time to clear the roads, or close schools and pivot to a remote-learning day.

How we decide:  School closures are announced when authorized by the Canyons Superintendent of Schools or his designee after consulting with senior staff members and the Transportation Department, which has drivers out on inclement days as early as 4 a.m. to survey road conditions. The National Weather Service and other state, county and city agencies also may be consulted.

How we notify families: Canyons District will notify families and employees of emergency remote-learning days as early as possible through our notification system. We also will employ our websites and Facebook and Twitter accounts. Parents and employees also should tune into Wasatch Front radio and television stations for information. Please note that closures are for one day only.

How can students and parents prepare for emergency remote-learning days?

If inclement weather is in the forecast, teachers will work with students to make sure they have the materials and assignments they need to learn from home. Elementary students will work independently with a parent or guardian to complete the assignments and learning expectations communicated by their teacher using instructional packets or by logging in to CSD’s Canvas learning portal. Middle and high school students will log in to the Canvas dashboard for each of their classes and work their way through their regular course schedules.

Learning expectations: Teachers will be available on remote-learning days via email and connect with students through Canvas or Zoom/Google Meet.

Sporting events and practices, after school tutoring and theatrical rehearsals and performances will be canceled unless road conditions improve enough to be able to safely hold the activity. We understand inclement weather can cause power and Internet outages. If you lose power or WiFi access at home, contact your teacher or school to report the outage and continue to work on previously assigned learning activities.

Stay in the know: It’s important, each year, for families to log in to Skyward Family Access to update their contact information and settings. For help updating Skyward settings, please call 801-826-5544.

As per district policy, Glacier Hills will have students line up outside each day unless the temperature drops below 23 degrees or it is snowing or raining.  In the case of extreme temperatures, snow or rain, the doors will be opened in the morning and students will be asked to enter their grade level pods.  Each pod will have an educational video playing in the collaborative space. The same procedure will be followed for our daily recess if we have extreme temperatures, snow or rain.

In the mornings, students that get off the bus will be taken to the learning stairs or breakfast until 8:40 and then let into the pods. The doors will open for all students at 8:40 AM.  Please do not drop your students off before 8:40 AM. The teachers have a negotiated planning time until 8:40 AM.  Please make sure all students wear a coat and bring hats and gloves during the winter.

PTA News:

Glacier Hills annual Book Swap is coming up! Have your child bring any gently used books you would like to donate to the swap from Dec 5-9. Then on Dec 14-15, every child at Glacier Hills will have a chance to pick a new-to-them book to keep, just in time for Winter Break! Thank you for supporting this wonderful way to bring more books into the lives of our students!”

Join us for our Barnes and Noble Day on Saturday, December 3rd.  Do a little Christmas shopping or get a treat from the cafe.  The store will donate a portion of all sales the entire day to our school.  Just mention that you’re from our school when you check out.  Invite friends and family as well to shop that day.

Our school choir will be singing at 1:00 at the store and we will have holiday story time before and after the performance from our teachers!  The schedule of story time will be released soon.

We are still needing donations for our Emergency Preparedness Kits. Here are the Sign Up Genius links for each grade. We are asking for (3)- packages of 8-10 granola bars and (2)- packages of 12 water bottles for each class. We can fill in any missing items if the classes have 25+ students.

We are asking parents that donations come in by the end of November.

Here are the links for each grade level.
