October School Community Council Meeting Minutes

  – Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2026

Attendance: Meghann Shaw(Chair), Zeke Alexander (Vice-Chair), Rachel Merrill, Stephanie Robbins, Dustin Hughes, Wendy Buchanan, Julie Winfree (Principal), Samantha Harris (Vice Principal), Kristie Koyle, Jeny Wariner

Missing: Heidi Gardner, Steve Christensen

Guest: Karen Pederson- School Board

1. Welcome & Call to Order 5:15 PM
2. Approval of Agenda – Everyone
3. Approval of September’s Meeting Minutes- by Dustin and Wendy
4. Chair Update
   1. SCC Meeting Tip: Brief training on Robert’s Rules of Order.
      1. Example: Motion- I move to, second, debate, vote, restate, announce the vote.
          
5. Principal Update – Principal Winfree and Sam
   1.  School updates and current needs
      1. Social media push to highlight and celebrate. New posts on Wed and Sunday.
      1. Highlight initiatives, new program, activities, staff spotlights.
      1. Facebook and Instagram links are in the Yeti Yell
   1. Avid Showcase in Nov 17^th so we voted unanimously to cancel the Nov 18^th meeting and Move it to December 9th
6. Safe Walking Route
   1. White City Concerns
      1. Cross walk on Galena and Poppy  plus needing sidewalk along Poppy,
      1. Onyx and Emerald off of Poppy also need cross walks/lines
      1. May need to go to White City, City Council
   1. School Concerns
      1. Eliminate Thistle in School grass coming from park.
      1. Keep Gates Locked
   1.  Parent drop-off and pick-up concerns
            – Church parking lots still trying to get people off via community : parking on the side streets and safe walking routes. Also using Bear park which is causing unsafe traffic for the walkers.

• SCC Membership & Bylaws:
  • Review and approve proposed bylaw changes
    • The number of school community council will consist of 11.
    • Karen Pederson -Be sure 50 /50 with 1^st and 2^nd year council members
  • Unanimous vote.
• Land Trust / TSSP Update
  • Funds for a teacher and reading interventionist- waiting for teacher finalization.
  • Half day sub for teacher training. For IRPs and intervention groups.
  • More funds: Cell tower money put in principal discretionary money ($4022.16) We will vote in a future meeting. 
• Safety Drill Report
  • Review District Safety Plan
    • Drills each month;
      • fire drill,
      • Unplanned secure event, very successful- 2 minutes from playground.
    • 4 safety meetings per year.
    • Technology used differently depending on the drill/event.
    • Safety leads for smaller groups.
    • Emergency Buckets being inventoried.
    • Stop the bleed kits in each class and teachers trained.
• Digital Citizen Presentation
  • Being a good citizen digitally in use and environment
    • Safe technology use with students
    • Internet filtering and plan
      • LanSchool for chromebooks (3-5 Grade), Apple Classroom for Ipads (K-2 Grade).
        • See what is on each screen- redirect, push students.
        • ipad, chromebook, math, stem, testing use.
      • Flagging: email to principle and parents.
  • Built into thrive time lessons. One lesson per 6 week unit.
  • Digital cit week.
    •  5 Stickers being given out in Stem- Application. 
    • Yeti Yell this week too as part of the celebration.
