Brief summary of comments:
Children are given a clear overview of appropriate uses of AI in an academic setting. The school staff strive to minimize tech exposure and are very conscientious about balancing screen time and other interactive learning modes.
The presentation stressed that digital education must be reinforced by example by parents, teachers, and other folks the kids interact with to normalize balanced use of tech. It is important to be clear and direct about expectations and rules surrounding tech.
They have an ongoing emphasis on citing clearly any material.
Digital citizenship is deliberately taught in science, library time and in other consistent visible places for both students, teachers and parents to continue reinforcing balanced tech lifestyles.
- Review & Approval of Digital Citizenship Plan:
Plan was unanimously approved
- Review & Vote on Revisions to Technology/Smart Device Policy:
The SCC had a robust discussion with the school board member’s experience and the ongoing needs to change with evolving technology and protecting both the privacy and learning environment needs of everyone. There was a lot of discussion about the exact wording to ensure clear guidelines for everyone to avoid confusion and keep students safe while still respecting parent’s needs to access their kids. Ultimately the vote on the actual final document was postponed till the next meeting to ensure that the wording reflected everyone’s needs clearly.
6. Safety Drills & School Safety Plan:
A bomb threat drill was successfully conducted this month. It was the most effective drill so far. The kids were quiet and quick. The principal is good about creating ways to ensure the teachers are through every time.
7. Review of Council’s Stewardship Responsibilities
- LAND Trust Fund update (expenditures, academic alignment):
Almost all of these funds go to the school aides.
- Teacher & Student Success Plan (TSSA) progress and anticipated budget changes:
We are going to use funding to send five AVID instructors to the AVID National Institute rather than the AVID summer training. All of our AVID teachers have already completed the summer training and would better benefit from doing the National Institute event. If the summer AVID training is held in Salt Lake, they will attend as the cost of transportation will not be an issue.
- Vote on approval to transfer: $4,134 from Cell Tower Funds to Principal’s Discretionary Account: The principal will use the money for teacher support materials/needs.
Vote passed with unanimous approval from the SCC
9. Member Concerns / Public Comments:
Motion to approve cancellation of December meeting was made by Wendy Buchannon, Seconded by Stephany Robbins. The motion passed unanimously.
There were no other SCC concerns at this time.
