Good evening Glacier Hills families,
Welcome to the first official Yeti Yell! This newsletter will be sent every Sunday evening. I am in hopes that parents take the time to read the information each week, as it is important that we are a team that works together to support your children. The first few newsletters are long as there is a lot to share. Please take the time to read to the end.
Kindergarten Schedule – Kindergarten students will start this school year a little differently than in years past. Kindergarten will start the same day as all students, August 19th. However, they will only attend until 11:40 Monday – Thursday of the first week. This will allow our teachers to conduct individual “Get to Know You” meetings with each student during the afternoons of these days. Please call the office if you have not scheduled an appointment for your Kindergartener.
Nominations are now open for the Glacier Hills School Community Council (SCC). School Community Councils are composed of elected parents and/or guardians whose children attend the school, elected employee representatives, and the school principal. As directed by state law, School Community Councils (SCC) review achievement data, help identify academic needs, provide input on school improvement plans, and assist in evaluating the success of the plans.
The SCC is also responsible for determining how the LAND Trust funds are used in our school. When Utah was granted Statehood, parcels of land were placed in a perpetual Trust with the children of Utah as beneficiaries. Revenues from these lands go into the Permanent State School Fund. The dividends and interest of that fund are distributed annually to each public school in Utah.
Serving on the School Community Council is an excellent way to be part of school improvement and supporting your child’s educational experience. Each fall parents and teachers are invited to submit a Declaration of Candidacy to serve on the SCC. Elections are held each year before the start of the school year.
If you are interested in being a member of the School Community Council (SCC), please email Julia Winfree (Julia.winfree@canyonsdistrict.org) by Sunday, September 1st, 2024.
Yeti T-shirts – We would like to thank Alta View Hospital for donating student T-shirts given to every student on the first day of school. Alta View is a fantastic partner to Glacier Hills, and we greatly appreciate their generosity and support. We would also like to thank the PTA for providing a lunch to our staff during our teacher trainings last week before school started. The staff was well fed, and we are so appreciative.
Volunteer Registration – It is time to renew your supervised volunteer application with Canyons School District. All volunteers in schools, including members of the PTA, School Community Council, anyone attending field trips or working with students in any capacity need to complete and submit a yearly application form for background screening. For more information, please visit volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org or call 801-826-5171.
Parent Square: Our school will be using Parent Square again this year as its primary form of communication with families. This platform provides many options that facilitate communication with families of all languages. You are not required to sign up or download the app to receive communication from Parent Square, but it will improve the features for you if you do.

Road Construction: Several of the roads leading to Glacier Hills have been closed or have detours currently. Sego Lily is closed at Galena and Antimony, but is open at Flint and Poppy Lane. Please leave plenty of time to get to school as some of these closures will cause backups for parents dropping students off.
Red Carpet on Monday – Tomorrow, the first day of school, we will have a red carpet welcoming for students. Parents are encouraged to line the front of the school and help clap the students into the school. We will start the procession with the Kindergarten students at 8:55 and the other grades will follow in order. Parents are permitted to go into the back of the school to help students find their lines on the first day only. Starting Tuesday, parents will be asked to stay in the front of the school or drop students off on the grass out back. This is for student safety as we have over 630 students this year. Teachers will be in back to help students. Kindergarten parents are permitted to be in the back for this entire week.
Breakfast and Arrival time: Glacier Hills serves breakfast every day starting at 8:30 AM. Breakfast is $1.00. Students may start arriving at 8:30 AM. If they are eating breakfast they can enter into the cafeteria near the front of the car drop off line. If students are not eating breakfast they are asked not to arrive at school before 8:40 AM. All students will line up in the back after they eat or as they arrive. The front doors open at 8:40 and students that are dropped off can enter and walk through the school and out the back doors.
Pick up- Parents always ask what the procedure is for students after school. Many of our students ride the bus. The bus lane is in the back of the school and teachers lead the bus riders out to their lines. Walkers are escorted to their grade level doors and leave from there. Parents are allowed to be out back to pick up students, as there are not as many students and there are not as many parents picking up in the back. The car riders exit the school in several different ways. The Kinder students exit their Kindergarten wing door with a teacher. The 1st and 2nd Grade car riders exit through the front doors of the school. The 3rd graders exit the west doors by the faculty parking and small playground. and then walk around to the front on the west side of the school. The 4th and 5th Graders exit through their grade level doors in the back of the school and then walk around to the front of the school.
Car Drop off and crosswalk videos: Glacier Hills is a large elementary and many families drive students to and from school. We have many cars entering the parking lot and drop off lane daily. Please watch these short videos so you know the procedures we would like everyone to follow. Most of all please be patient, kind, and go slow!
